The Full Story
The history of Sakasyu is longer than that of the famous Tsukiji Fish Market, let alone today’s Toyosu market. Our legacy was started by the founder, Shizuo Sakai in historic Nihonbashi area, where Tokyo’s central fish market used to be. Hestarted out both as a wholesaler and broker; purchasing fish from all over Japanand selling it to brokers as well as directly to retailers.

After the horrendous 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed the market, it was moved to the Shibaura area then to Tsukiji, replacing an old Navy research institute.

At the newly established market in Tsukiji, it was decided to consolidate all
wholesaling activities by setting up a company. Wholesaling rights of old
businesses from Nihonbashi were assessed and purchased by the new company. 300-year history of the Nihonbashi Fish Market’s wholesaling, that started in the beginning of the Edo era, came to an end. Sakasyu reestablished itself as a dedicated broker along with colleagues.
